Have you ever heard of the word AED? AED is a machine made to save lives. I think some of you have seen this sign, figure 1. Although every school in Fukui has this machine now,a iot of schools did not have this machine ten years ago. Here is a sad story. On September 6,2002,a sports day was held at a school in Fukui. A girl fell down after she finished running a relay. Her name was Saori. She was only sixteen yesrs old and that day was her sixteenth birthday. Her heart stopped moving. Teachers called 119 quickly and the ambulance soon came. Before that, teachers tried many things to save her life. After she got to a hospital, her heart started moving again. Her mother belived,Saori can open her eyes and move again. She tried many things. She recorded the voice of her friends and family, and she brought it to the hospital. Saori's friends talked to her again and again, but Saori did not open her eyes because it took about thirty minutes to get to the hospital. It was too late. She died after four days. Her mother could not understand why Saori died. She looked on the Internet and learned many things. In 2002 AEDs were already used in America, but in Japan they were not very common. Many Japanese people did not know how to use AEDs. She thought that if every school had an AED and if someone knew how to use it, maybe Saori's life would have been saved. She asked the governor of Fukui for AEDs. Soon an AED was introduced to each school in Fukui. Now we can find AEDs in many places, for example, they are also in stations, community, centers, and so on. There are over 1200 AEDs in Fukui. It is not difficult to use them because you can follow the sound guide, and now many people have learned how to use them. If you learn how to use one, maybe you can help other people. Teachers are learning how to use AEDs now. I hope every student can learn how to use an AED at school to save a lot of lives.
